Now, get ready, because October 3rd marks Tillie’s (she/her) OFFICIAL debut as a Ginger & Maude® New Talent! ??

We absolutely adore Tillie because she radiates that empowering, you-can-do-this attitude we all need to get ourselves hyped on life while also offering an empathetic and judgment-free energy that just makes you feel safe and cared for. She also knows a thing or two about painting! ?

Q: Tell us about yourself!
A: I was born and raised in Chiloquin, OR, a tiny town next to Crater Lake. Fully immersed in my Indigenous culture, I grew up going to culture camp every summer learning the Klamath language, as well as how to bead and make drums and arrowheads. I moved into my aunt and uncle’s in Portland when I was 17, and it was a BIG culture shock. But I fell in love and haven’t left since!
As a teenager, I would dye my every and any color. I would also cut and razor cut it myself, mostly because stylists in my tiny hometown couldn’t do that perfect emo haircut I was going for. Then, one of my first jobs was as a receptionist for a small salon where I got to learn about hair more in-depth, a passion I carried with me long after. When I went to college, still not sure what I wanted for a career, I studied psychology. But hair was always something I came back to. After trying different career paths and the pandemic happening, I decided in 2021 to go to the Aveda Institute and start my journey.

Q: Why did you choose Ginger & Maude as home?
A: When I was a few months away from graduating I did some research on salons in the Portland area. That’s when I found Ginger & Maude. After reading the website, doing a deep dive on the Instagram page, and asking teachers and people in the industry, I had my mind made up that I needed to be a part of this amazing community. I love that Ginger & Maude is a B Corp®, I love the inclusivity, and I love the focus on curly hair and making sure everyone feels welcome here. Not to mention I love the aesthetic! (Who doesn’t love a Barbie wall?!) So when I saw that they were hiring a part-time Office Assistant, I knew I had to go for it; that could be my way into my dream job.

Q: Tell us the styles and trends that have you the most excited right now?
A: I am currently obsessed with hand-painted buzz cuts. Having the hair as a canvas to paint an intricate design is something I love doing. I also love that everyone wants to go copper right now—everyone looks great in copper!

Q: What is currently your fave KEVIN.MURPHY product and why do you love it?
A: I am a big fan of the HAIR.RESORT Spray. I love how it looks in my clients' hair (and my own!). It has enough of that stick without extra weighing down, so it’s great for detailing. Plus, it smells like a mini vacation to the tropics.

Q: If you weren't a hairstylist, what do you think you would be?
A: In a world where I could do anything, I would be a stand-up comedian. In a more realistic world, I would be a therapist.

Q: Got any Halloween hair tips or easy last-minute costume ideas?
A: Hair accessories are an easy go-to (think headbands with a tiny witch hat)! If you’re feeling ambitious, you could do two braids and clip some plastic spiders into them.
